Resources

As I, like every blogger, build up a portfolio of blogs, I come across links to resources that will be of interest to my reader(s). As well as listing them in context on a post, I will also add them here for convenient reference. It will start sparse, but I am hoping I can build it up in time. If you have any to add, place them in the comments.

Technical

  1. 22/32/42 tooth 152mm crank length crankset – for the best low range riding
  2. Clipless Riding Shoes – provide one way to stop your feet slipping off the pedals.
  3. Gear Metres of Development Chart – I use this site to calculate the best tooth count for both cassette and chainring gears
  4. Hook and Loop Cable Ties – for holding everything from flags to walking sticks to my trike
  5. Mountain Bike Pedals – Large platforms for multiple foot positions
  6. Nuvinci (Now Enviolo) stepless hub “gears” – provide smooth reliable gear change
  7. Recumbent Crank Length Calculator – I knew that the traditional crank length was giving me grief, but this site helped me understand why.
  8. Rohloff – 14 speed hub gears
  9. Schlumpf Mountain Drive – Crankset replacement with two gears
  10. Schwalbe Big Ben – My preferred balloon tires
  11. What is the best crank length for cycling? by BikeRadar – While intended for upright bikes it does give a lot of general information that helps (or hinders) a decision.
  12. Hook-and-loop tape from Velcro makes for an excellent locking brake for any trike.
  13. Description of gear inches on Wikipedia
  14. You’re Doing It Wrong: Hills Are NOT Harder Than Cycling On The Flat” by Alee Denham
  15. The Bafang 250w crank drive e-assist is a moderately priced option to power your trike.
  16. Finding 152mm cranksets with a 22 tooth small chainring.
  17. Bicycle Repair Toolkits.
  18. Square Taper Bottom Brackets
  19. Orange Bunting Flags – is a cheap alternative replacement flags when the original gets lost or stolen
  20. Roll Around TrikeTight Work Stand
  21. Trekking poles with camera mounts – that I can mount on my trike to film my rides

Recumbent Trike Manufacturers mentioned in this Blog

  1. The Catrike Villager is a sturdy, non-folding trike with direct steering and few adjustments. My unit is well over a decade old. They have since fixed the seating so that it is more comfortable. I managed the same by tucking a pillow between the straps and the mesh to support the lumbar. I like the direct steering both to ride and because of the additional simplicity of design.
  2. A recent acquisition is a 2021 Greenspeed Magnum BW – probably one of the final designs by Ian Sims, the founder of Greenspeed in Australia. Mind you, Ian was not a proponent of 26 inch rear wheels. I can see why, as they make the rear end much heavier.
  3. My HP Velotechnik Gekko fx is a light but sturdy tadpole trike manufactured in Germany. I have been riding mine for a decade. My only complaint is that it is difficult to fold since it folds down. On the positive side, you don’t need to remove the seat first. I have heard whispers that it is challenging to get support in Australia from the factory in Germany.

Maps, Trails and Paths

  1. AllTrails – A great all-rounder but while there are over 6,000 trails recorded in Australia, there are no bike/trike rides in my local area. I like the facility to go to Google for directions to the start point.
  2. Bikemap
  3. Google Maps – I alway include a Google Map both for those that don’t use one of the other apps and for travelling to the start point.
  4. Relive
  5. Ride with GPS
  6. Strava is my go-to for recording rides – mainly because of it’s excellent Apple Watch app. I can download the GPX and add it to the other apps. Strava is all about exercise more than the trip.
